Personalized Mindfulness Meditations with AI & The vision of Matt Monday

Awareness leads to clarity. Clarity leads to choice, and choice leads to transformation.
  • Matt Monday

In this captivating episode of The Mindful Coach podcast, I sit down with Matt Monday, an entrepreneur and former product lead at ESPN and Apple, who's on a mission to maximize human potential. Matt shares his remarkable journey from high-achieving corporate professional to mindfulness advocate and innovator in the world of AI-powered well-being.

From Apple to Awakening

Matt's story begins with an unexpected win of an iPod that led to a career at Apple, where he played a pivotal role in the App Store's early days. However, it wasn't until after leaving Apple that he discovered mindfulness through a chance encounter. This revelation set him on a path to explore the intersection of technology, personal growth, and human potential.

The Birth of VITAL: AI-Powered Mindfulness

At the heart of our conversation is VITAL, Matt's groundbreaking startup that's revolutionizing the meditation experience. VITAL combines cutting-edge AI technologies to create:

  • Custom-crafted meditations on demand
  • Personalized guidance based on user input
  • A variety of meditation styles and techniques

What sets VITAL apart is its ability to generate meditations tailored to specific, real-time needs specific to your life, in a matter of seconds. This is where it gets real. Instead of a generic stress reduction meditation, you can create a specific meditation on "Help me to not get triggered by my Boss Bill, in company meetings. He's so disrespectful to people. " Choose the duration, voice, and music you want --and be listening in seconds.

Addressing AI Concerns

We tackle the elephant in the room: concerns about AI-led meditations. Matt offers reassurance about data privacy and explains how VITAL aims to augment, not replace, human meditation teachers and coaches.

The Future of Coaching and Well-being

Looking ahead, Matt shares his vision for VITAL's evolution, including:

  • Expanding voice options and languages
  • Developing more advanced coaching interfaces
  • Creating specialized workshops with expert coaches

A Powerful Mantra

Matt leaves us with a thought-provoking phrase encapsulating his approach: "Awareness leads to clarity. Clarity leads to choice. Choice leads to transformation."

Whether you're a meditation novice, a seasoned practitioner, or a coach looking to enhance your offerings, this episode offers valuable insights into the future of mindfulness and personal development. Join us as we explore how technology and ancient wisdom converge to create new possibilities for human growth and well-being.

Brett Hill:

The Mindful Coach podcast.

Brett Hill:

So welcome to this edition of the Mindful Coach Podcast.

Brett Hill:

I'm your host, Brett Hill and I'm super psyched today to welcome to the show Matt Monday.

Brett Hill:

And I've had such a great time conversing and working with Matt in the past year or so in his venture, which is going to blow your mind.

Brett Hill:

Let me introduce Matt.

Brett Hill:

He's an entrepreneur, startup consultant, former product lead and Apple.

Brett Hill:

He's on a mission to maximize human potential.

Brett Hill:

And let me tell you, that's not just a sound bite.

Brett Hill:

He truly is on that mission, more so than anybody I've ever met.

Brett Hill:

And that's a crazy thing to say in a way, but I mean, you'll see what I mean when you hear from firsthand the way that he holds like a calling to help humanity in a really big way, bigger than a whole lot of people.

Brett Hill:

And his, one of his main ventures right now with this is a startup called Vital and it's an AI powered, well being coach that does mindful meditations.

Brett Hill:

You aren't going to believe it.

Brett Hill:

So welcome to the show, Matt.

Brett Hill:

So great to have you here.

Matt Monday:

Great to be here.

Matt Monday:

Thank you, Brett.

Matt Monday:

It's an honor and it's a pleasure.

Matt Monday:

I'm excited to have you.

Matt Monday:

Had another great conversation with you today.

Brett Hill:

Oh yeah, yeah.

Brett Hill:

Matt and I talk from time to time.

Brett Hill:

He's always inspiring and, and that's one of the reasons I wanted to invite him to the show is because of his vision and it's not just sitting around.

Brett Hill:

I think I'm going to help people today.

Brett Hill:

He's actually doing the work of bringing the latest in technology.

Brett Hill:

Of course he comes from Apple where of course they're always inventing cool stuff.

Brett Hill:

There was your calling to work at Apple.

Brett Hill:

Were you called to work at Apple?

Brett Hill:

Did that work out?

Brett Hill:

Did that really land for you in terms of being able to align with, you know, who you are to help people?

Matt Monday:

Yeah, great question.

Matt Monday:

So, funny enough, I grew up a big PC guy.

Matt Monday:

I won an ipod in a raffle.

Brett Hill:

Oh, that's fun.

Matt Monday:

Yeah, that was my only like Apple, you know, experience.

Matt Monday:

I, I was really unsure what I wanted to do during college.

Matt Monday:

And right after college I had a bit of a knack for a broad range of things and focus areas which made it difficult to focus and pick one.

Matt Monday:

And so right before I got a job offer from Apple, I was actually studying for the lsat.

Matt Monday:

I was interested in becoming a lawyer.

Brett Hill:

Is that right?

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

But it ended up being an amazing fit at Apple.

Matt Monday:

I worked in itunes on the Marketing team as a data analyst.

Matt Monday:

I had a, you know, my degree was in finance, which was at that time, numbers and spreadsheets.

Matt Monday:

And that's what the marketing team needed.

Matt Monday:

So it was a really great fit.

Matt Monday:

And right as right after I joined the App Store launched and given my background in media and video games growing up, it was a great fit for me to move over to the App Store editorial team, whereas my role to basically play the games and give my vote on which ones would be the best to feature on the front page of the App Store each week.

Matt Monday:

And so it was a great, really great fit.

Brett Hill:

That's amazing.

Brett Hill:

And so somewhere were you into like mindfulness and meditation at that time?

Brett Hill:

Was that a part of your world?

Matt Monday:

I had no idea what it even was.

Matt Monday:

So I grew up, yeah, I grew up playing sports, so very much into performance.

Matt Monday:

I was, I was a wrestler on our, on our wrestling team in high school.

Matt Monday:

We won states.

Matt Monday:

So, you know, high performance, high achievement.

Matt Monday:

I was an academic all star in high school.

Matt Monday:

I got a scholarship in college.

Matt Monday:

I did, let's say I had as much fun as I did studying.

Matt Monday:

And that's to say I did, you know, both of those to the maximum and.

Matt Monday:

But I never learned about mindfulness.

Matt Monday:

It was only after I left Apple that I had a chance occurrence which introduced me to it.

Brett Hill:

Oh, wow, so you won the iPad that got you started with Apple, wound up working for Apple, then you leave Apple and another chance occurrence opens up a whole new door.

Brett Hill:

Can you tell us about what was that like, what you discovered?

Matt Monday:

Yeah, so at the time, I stumbled into it actually through an interest in religions outside of Christianity.

Matt Monday:

So I was born in a small town in Michigan.

Matt Monday:

My family went to church.

Matt Monday:

It happened to be a Christian church.

Matt Monday:

I had no say in that.

Matt Monday:

So I guess, you know, that made me a Christian until I.

Brett Hill:

Spite of fault.

Brett Hill:

Right?

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

Questions that, you know, people couldn't really answer or didn't really want to answer.

Matt Monday:

So I let it go for a bit and then I had an experience in college that kind of stuck with me.

Matt Monday:

Let's call it a wager I made with God, if God existed.

Matt Monday:

And long story short, I asked God, if you exist, help me pass this exam and I'll do whatever you want for the rest of my life.

Brett Hill:

Okay, A soul contract here.

Matt Monday:

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Matt Monday:

So a contract more than a wager.

Matt Monday:

And that exam I actually had not studied for, I was guessing my way through it and I just knew it was going to be a problem if I didn't pass that exam.

Matt Monday:

I was going to lose my scholarship.

Matt Monday:

I was going to get kicked out of the honors college.

Matt Monday:

I was going to be in trouble.

Matt Monday:

So I made, I asked God, if you exist, help me pass this exam.

Matt Monday:

I'll do whatever you want for the rest of my life.

Matt Monday:

So that next day, I woke up and I got a 97 on that test.

Brett Hill:

Unbelievable.

Matt Monday:

Oh, shoot.

Matt Monday:

I guess I, yeah.

Matt Monday:

What is, what is God?

Matt Monday:

And what am I now supposed to do for God?

Brett Hill:

And so fast.

Matt Monday:

Fast forward to.

Matt Monday:

ast forward to about the year:

Matt Monday:

And I, I, I stumbled into a group on meetup where one of the attendees was a lady named Zoe Wild.

Matt Monday:

She offered wildlife coaching.

Matt Monday:

And I was like, all right, I like animals.

Matt Monday:

But I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with animals.

Matt Monday:

So I looked up her profile, and she was a coach.

Matt Monday:

I had no idea what a coach was.

Matt Monday:

She had just come back from, I believe, Tibet.

Matt Monday:

She, you know, studied with Buddhist monks.

Brett Hill:

Wow.

Matt Monday:

And most importantly at this, this time, she had done a lot of research into the world's religions.

Matt Monday:

It's like, okay, let me ask this person what they think God might be.

Matt Monday:

And so I set up a time to meet with her, and she shared with me that there, you know, yes, there is a God, but there's much more to it than this in her mind.

Matt Monday:

And the beginnings of this, you know, she used a great analogy with me, is that imagine you're at the beach and you're looking into the ocean, and you see these very distinct waves.

Matt Monday:

They're so distinct that someone could even surf on one with a surfboard.

Matt Monday:

It's definitely a wave.

Matt Monday:

And those distinct waves are like us as people, Right?

Matt Monday:

We are distinct people on this planet.

Matt Monday:

But those waves are part of something much, much, much larger.

Matt Monday:

They're part of the entire ocean.

Matt Monday:

And the same way that those distinct waves are part of the entire ocean, us unique people are part of the entire universe.

Matt Monday:

And that that universe comes from God.

Matt Monday:

And we can tap into that through meditation.

Matt Monday:

And she walked me through a couple of guided meditations before introducing me into meditating without guidance.

Matt Monday:

And it was, it was pretty transformative for me.

Matt Monday:

I really saw life differently from that point on, still endeavoring to understand, okay, but what does God want me to do now?

Matt Monday:

And we can come back to more over the years, exploration into what that might be.

Matt Monday:

But that's, that was the beginning of meditation.

Matt Monday:

I will say that I let go of it for nearly a decade, maybe another, maybe half a decade, five years, until I was reintroduced to it.

Matt Monday:

But I'll pause there.

Brett Hill:

Well, that's amazing.

Brett Hill:

Story.

Brett Hill:

And I love the ocean analogy.

Brett Hill:

I actually use that a lot in my own work and my own.

Brett Hill:

The way I describe my own sense of being.

Brett Hill:

So I love that very much.

Brett Hill:

And I think without going, you know, two sideways on this, I think the problem is that people, people believe they are the wave and don't realize their ocean ness, you know.

Brett Hill:

And so that, I think, is the real value of meditation.

Brett Hill:

Clearly, it had an impact on you.

Brett Hill:

And so it's like you.

Brett Hill:

So here you are, you've had this technical background, you've had all these amazing experiences and kind of high performance and everything.

Brett Hill:

You basically are touching and gifted from God, the answers to the questions and then a real awakening with your inner work.

Brett Hill:

How does that then lead you to the startups that you've done, which get us into the conversation about vital.

Matt Monday:

Yeah, I think some of the stories going back to the Bible always kind of resonated with me where, you know, there's a question like, if someone is in dire straits and you have the capacity to help them, should you do that?

Matt Monday:

And there's examples of people doing that.

Matt Monday:

And that seemed like the right thing to do.

Matt Monday:

That felt like, okay, if I have the capacity to do this, I should do this.

Matt Monday:

And I'm not the first person to discover this at a young age.

Matt Monday:

Working at Apple, making a lot of money, having a very prestigious role, at least for where I was in my career, it felt like I was just achieving at this very high level, but it wasn't quite fulfilling me.

Matt Monday:

And I left Apple to embark on my first startup, which was an app to help people look up nonprofits so they could donate from their smartphone.

Matt Monday:

And behind the scenes on this was more transparency into where do your donations go and what are the organizations doing and what are the different types of organizations that are out there.

Matt Monday:

a lot of this stemmed from in:

Matt Monday:

I remember that and other experiences.

Matt Monday:

I traveled to Brazil when I was younger and just the dramatic difference between people living in incredible mansions right next to slums of people that were, you know, so poor they almost didn't have clothes.

Matt Monday:

And just realizing, like, wow, that there's.

Matt Monday:

There's something in about life that feels a little bit off to me.

Matt Monday:

So when I ended up shutting that down and I long, you know, I'll fast forward to say I worked at ESPN for a while.

Matt Monday:

I built more products, and then I went to an app design and development agency Building more digital products.

Matt Monday:

And while I was there, the leadership team was really kind.

Matt Monday:

They offered to let me work with an executive leadership coach.

Matt Monday:

And this individual had a slightly different take on coaching.

Matt Monday:

He incorporated mindfulness as part of not just tapping into the broader universe, but also for practicing a muscle of awareness, something that I was really unfamiliar with at the time, like basically completely ignorant of.

Matt Monday:

What does it mean to be aware, aware of my breath, aware of myself, aware of my emotions.

Matt Monday:

And so with that and many other things that this individual changed my life.

Matt Monday:

His name is Helga Hellberg.

Matt Monday:

He's a great, great individual, great guy.

Matt Monday:

And he had an idea to take his one on one coaching and do a one to many digital platform.

Matt Monday:

So that digital platform was the beginning of me really endeavoring into not just social impact broadly, but really impact on individuals by transforming how they think of themselves and then therefore how they lead their own lives and can lead others through that.

Matt Monday:

And, and so that was, you know, that was like a pretty big shift.

Matt Monday:

I learned a lot in that trying to build this digital coaching platform.

Matt Monday:

I, we ended up shutting it down, but it stuck with me and it's still with me today.

Matt Monday:

And that's kind of the genesis of how I got in touch with the VITAL team, which I joined last year.

Brett Hill:

So tell us a bit about the vision of Vital.

Brett Hill:

What does VITAL do?

Matt Monday:

Yeah, we'll come back to the vision.

Matt Monday:

What it does today is pretty revolutionary.

Matt Monday:

It is way ahead of its time.

Matt Monday:

The original co founders were the very first in the world, at least that we're aware of, to combine several new AI technologies, including the ability to take text from an output like a script and turn that into a voice, and then to create text based off of inputs into a large language model like ChatGPT.

Matt Monday:

And they combine it with beautiful music to essentially create these custom crafted meditations built on demand, uniquely for each user in the moment they want that meditation.

Matt Monday:

So anytime you want a custom meditation, you tell it what you want.

Matt Monday:

It takes a couple seconds to input it and then you hit generate and you get a beautiful guided meditation, whether it's a visualization, loving kindness, affirmations, mindfulness.

Matt Monday:

And it's a really interesting way to get into meditation for the first time ever.

Matt Monday:

People who have been meditating for years love it because they know that they can craft just the right meditation to help them shift their mindset.

Matt Monday:

So in a sense, it's almost like micro coaching sessions for them.

Matt Monday:

And that's really the opportunity that I saw around how important awareness is and mindfulness is to coaching.

Matt Monday:

That we could use this medit, this custom med, you know, AI powered meditation app as a base layer for doing more advanced coaching where we're allowing the technology to ask you questions and give, you know, help you reflect on your own thoughts, guide you towards new habits, help you explore your goals, help you explore your values.

Brett Hill:

So that's like future for future.

Matt Monday:

And we just started experimenting with that.

Brett Hill:

That's amazing.

Matt Monday:

And as you know, but you know, probably great for others to know is we have a strong belief that we don't want this app to replace the great meditation teachers that are out there, the great coaches that are out there in the future.

Matt Monday:

You know, this, we can see this moving into a world of therapy and beyond.

Matt Monday:

We really want vital to augment the work that great professionals like yourself are already doing in the world.

Matt Monday:

And so that's why we're really kind of shaping it as almost like a marketplace where you can select from a range of voices.

Matt Monday:

These voices are the voices of actual individuals that we have cloned with this technology.

Matt Monday:

And so today, not only can you hear different voices for each meditation, but soon you'll be able to have a slightly different experience depending on the voice that you engage with.

Matt Monday:

And as we continue to work together with, with our coaches, we'll offer the ability for the back and forth sessions to.

Matt Monday:

To be really built around the philosophies and the frameworks and the methodologies of each coach that we partner with.

Brett Hill:

So modifying it a bit based on the actual coach for the.

Brett Hill:

That the voices from.

Matt Monday:

Exactly.

Brett Hill:

So it's representing something of the philosophy, point of view, beliefs and practices of that particular.

Brett Hill:

That's amazing.

Brett Hill:

I want to come back just a minute because I think one of the things, I think it's quickly overlooked and under stated is what you mentioned about the capacity to be able to request the kind of meditation you want.

Brett Hill:

And I don't mean like loving kindness or attention, but more like on the topic that you want right now, that's one of the most powerful things.

Brett Hill:

And so for listeners, it's like you can go to joinvital AI and when you're there and you have an account, you can log in and it'll ask you what do you want to meditate on?

Brett Hill:

What is the topic that's on your mind like now Help me go to sleep because my mind is racing about this important interview I have tomorrow.

Brett Hill:

You can even.

Brett Hill:

Because it's you and AI.

Brett Hill:

You can even go so far as you know, my cousin Bob is just being a jerk and I can't stop Freaking out about it help me calm down.

Brett Hill:

And the meditation will be specifically framed around that particular detail in your particular life at this particular time.

Brett Hill:

That is, that blows my mind.

Brett Hill:

And in terms of functionality and practicality for in the moment needs.

Brett Hill:

It's so it can serve not only as a part of an ongoing process, but what I call.

Brett Hill:

I haven't put this on the list, but I think I should now.

Brett Hill:

But join Vital is one of my.

Brett Hill:

I have about five things I call mindful triage and this could be one of them.

Brett Hill:

You know, it's pretty amazing.

Matt Monday:

Absolutely.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

And that triage is exactly right.

Matt Monday:

It's it.

Matt Monday:

Because it's so fast.

Matt Monday:

Right.

Matt Monday:

And unlike your traditional meditation apps where you are browsing a catalog of pre recorded content and not to say it's not good content, but it's really tough to find the.

Matt Monday:

Hey, my, my boss Bobby, you know, was upset at me again for something that I thought we were on the same page about.

Matt Monday:

I don't know what to do.

Matt Monday:

It's going to be hard to find that meditation and calm.

Matt Monday:

I'm going to, you know, guarantee that it doesn't exist.

Matt Monday:

Well, yeah, and so, and, and you can, you can input that by tapping the record button.

Matt Monday:

You say it in five seconds, you hit generate.

Matt Monday:

Ten seconds later you're listening to something on that, you know, it's on that topic and it's very unbiased, it's very caring, it's very supportive.

Matt Monday:

And so it lowers your cortisol levels almost immediately.

Matt Monday:

It really makes you feel heard, it makes you feel supported.

Matt Monday:

And within like a couple minutes you will feel completely different than you were feeling just prior and amazing.

Matt Monday:

And practice these concepts that there's tweaks to it.

Matt Monday:

Right.

Matt Monday:

I had never done affirmations before I discovered Vital.

Matt Monday:

So saying nice words about yourself can have a really profound impact.

Brett Hill:

And vital, that's a really good one.

Matt Monday:

Exactly.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

And so we.

Matt Monday:

If you've never done that before, Vital will literally guide you on how to do it.

Matt Monday:

And then you don't need to use the app.

Matt Monday:

Any given day when you're kind of feeling down, just remind yourself like, no, I am, you know, great.

Matt Monday:

I am this, I am positive, and so on and so forth.

Matt Monday:

Same goes with loving kindness, same goes with mindfulness, same goes with visualization.

Matt Monday:

We have eight techniques in total, including unguided, which is now what I use the most to basically, you know, tap into that, that broader universe of everything.

Matt Monday:

And we have a streak counter as well.

Matt Monday:

So the way I think of it is when I see my Streaks going up.

Matt Monday:

I know that's correlated with feeling really great on a regular basis.

Brett Hill:

That's cool.

Brett Hill:

You've got some metrics of there as well.

Matt Monday:

That's right.

Brett Hill:

People can check this out because it is an amazing forward thinking application.

Brett Hill:

Before we ask the next question, you can change the music, the voice, the duration, the kind of meditation that it is.

Brett Hill:

Are there any other tweaks that you can manage?

Matt Monday:

Yeah, well, language is a big one, so we have five.

Brett Hill:

Oh, yeah, huge.

Matt Monday:

So we have customers all around the world.

Matt Monday:

Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Italian and English.

Matt Monday:

Sorry.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

And we also have the ability to save meditations on the iPhone app we have for Android users.

Matt Monday:

We have a web app version and with that one you can share meditations with your friends.

Matt Monday:

And much more on the way.

Matt Monday:

Much more on the way.

Brett Hill:

That's really exciting.

Brett Hill:

I know you are.

Brett Hill:

You know, this really aligns with your bigger vision of the world and the way you were just, you were starting out about how do I help the world?

Brett Hill:

It's like there's clearly some things that aren't right here.

Brett Hill:

And I really appreciate that about you.

Brett Hill:

One of the questions I wanted to ask is sort of the counterpoint to this, which is like, what would you.

Brett Hill:

What do you say to people that are worried about an AI leading a meditation?

Matt Monday:

Well, I say you should because we're stealing all your information.

Matt Monday:

No, I'm just kidding.

Matt Monday:

So it's under.

Matt Monday:

It's really understandable, you know, if you're not in tech, if your career has not been in technology.

Matt Monday:

AI can be a pretty broad term.

Matt Monday:

Does that mean robots?

Matt Monday:

Yes, it does.

Matt Monday:

Right.

Matt Monday:

Does that mean backend analytical systems to predict what movie to put in front of you to watch next?

Matt Monday:

Yes, that's also AI, like Netflix or.

Brett Hill:

Prime, you're saying, suggested for you.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

So AI is this really broad term.

Matt Monday:

And you know, it does get into this world of conversations.

Matt Monday:

And there are people I've heard of, like training in AI that uses data to inform these models.

Matt Monday:

Well, is it your data when you're talking to it?

Matt Monday:

No, that's not how you're training the model necessarily.

Matt Monday:

You can use, you know, and so there's all these caveats that if you're being really honest with people, it can get confusing.

Matt Monday:

So the first thing we say is like, look, we get it.

Matt Monday:

And most important is we don't use your data for anything that we're doing.

Matt Monday:

It's all private, secure.

Matt Monday:

That is not part of our business model.

Matt Monday:

It's a simple transaction after the.

Matt Monday:

You get to try it unlimited as Much as you want for seven days.

Matt Monday:

And then if you want to continue to use it, it's $9.99 a month.

Matt Monday:

That's the transaction.

Matt Monday:

We don't, we don't use your data like a social network would to put ads in front of you or to do anything with the model.

Brett Hill:

So just if I could interject real quick.

Brett Hill:

So what you're saying is that if someone says, hey, my brother Joe is being mean to me, how do I calm down?

Brett Hill:

You're not taking that prompt and saving it, using it to inform the model so it's just like a one time prompt and then it goes away.

Matt Monday:

That's right.

Matt Monday:

That's right.

Brett Hill:

Okay.

Matt Monday:

And there was another piece I was going to share, but.

Matt Monday:

Oh, then there's people have a little bit of hesitation around just the philosophy of should I let a robot give me a meditation?

Matt Monday:

No, it's only for humans.

Matt Monday:

And I get that as well.

Matt Monday:

It's like, yes, it would be great if you had your own personal human with you at all times to give you.

Matt Monday:

That is better.

Matt Monday:

That would be great.

Matt Monday:

But you can't always have Brett Hill with, with you to, you know, walk you through whatever you're working through at 2am in the morning.

Brett Hill:

Well, unless you've got Vital, then you can pick and then you do.

Brett Hill:

Because in full disclosure, I am a voice on the application then so.

Matt Monday:

Yeah, yes.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

A big fan favorite for sure.

Matt Monday:

So.

Brett Hill:

Oh, thank you.

Matt Monday:

You know, this happened last night.

Matt Monday:

I was actually at a birthday event and several of the people there are coaches themselves and just got on the topic of AI and shared with them that I have this app and there was certain hesitation, if not outright disdain for the concept.

Matt Monday:

I'm not going to try to sell you on it, but would you like to hear it?

Matt Monday:

And so we did a meditation and I think we turned the person who is most against it into the biggest fan.

Brett Hill:

Isn't that interesting?

Brett Hill:

It's like raw energy, so negative can also.

Brett Hill:

That same energy can be so positive.

Matt Monday:

And it's.

Brett Hill:

That's just brilliant that you said, I'm not going to tell you about it.

Brett Hill:

I'm going to have you do it because the experience is everything.

Brett Hill:

Really smart.

Matt Monday:

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Matt Monday:

So I think over time, as people have an opportunity to engage with new AI based products, their appetite and their willingness for trying something like Vital will hopefully increase.

Matt Monday:

Most of our current customers are, they're innovators, they're technologists.

Matt Monday:

They were actually thinking of building Vital themselves.

Matt Monday:

They found us and they're like, oh, use what you guys already have.

Matt Monday:

So we know we're very early with what we're doing and hopefully thanks to you and opportunities like this to speak directly to folks, this can help quell some concerns that the AI is not going to give you bad advice.

Matt Monday:

It's not using your data to do anything with that and really just got to try it to really get a feel for it.

Brett Hill:

Yeah.

Brett Hill:

And I want to say, coming back to that, as a coach who works with people in this area, I have plans and they're very close to integrate Vital as a part of my coaching offering.

Brett Hill:

Like, for example, I'm just about ready to come out with a mindful communications sequence to help people really, really learn some interest, some new ways to learn how to be more mindful and present in conversation with others.

Brett Hill:

And I want to use VITAL as a way to lock in the practices that I'm helping to people, asking people to do every week.

Brett Hill:

It'd be an amazing support system for that.

Brett Hill:

And so coaches can use it as a way to augment their offering.

Brett Hill:

And if anyone's interested in that, reach out to me because I'll be happy to walk you through how that can work.

Brett Hill:

And you can also look at my own@themindfulness.com in about a week that should be up.

Brett Hill:

And I don't normally foreshadow stuff like that.

Brett Hill:

It's just that I'm really excited about it and.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Brett Hill:

And it's going to be a lot of fun.

Matt Monday:

Awesome.

Brett Hill:

This is so good.

Brett Hill:

All your stuff.

Brett Hill:

It's like, you know, you're, you've talked a little bit about, you know, the future for Vital in terms of having actual coaching orientations and processings for that.

Brett Hill:

So is that the kind of thing that.

Brett Hill:

How far out do you think something like that is?

Brett Hill:

And I hate to ask you a roadmap question like that, but it's like, you know, where are you a year from now?

Brett Hill:

What do you think Vital is going to be able to mean to people?

Matt Monday:

Hopefully, at a bare minimum, it serves as a really great eye opener into the world of coaching.

Matt Monday:

Which is to say, I think especially in America, so many people kind of assume if I, you know, I've heard what I have from my parents and I heard what I have from my teachers, I kind of know everything I need to know.

Matt Monday:

Well, that's, that's really not true.

Matt Monday:

Even, even people who study the brain are learning new things about the brain all the time.

Matt Monday:

And not every one of your teachers is a brain expert.

Matt Monday:

And one of the most important things I think about that I think we as human beings need to understand is how does our brain work, how does our nervous system work, how does that work for us and how does that possibly work against us, even if it's not our own fault?

Matt Monday:

By the time you are old enough, it becomes your responsibility to take action on things that are no longer serving you.

Matt Monday:

But it's really hard to do on your own.

Matt Monday:

That's where a great coach can sit with you, get to know you and start to get a feel for what questions can they ask you to help you illuminate in your mind what's maybe working and what's not working and possibly why.

Matt Monday:

And then to continue to pull on that thread to get you to a point where you're kind of choosing new ways of responding and thinking and acting and behaving over time to really transform your life.

Matt Monday:

That, to me, I think is something that every single person on the planet should have access to.

Matt Monday:

And the problem is there's just not enough people like you, Brett.

Matt Monday:

There are just not enough.

Brett Hill:

And you.

Matt Monday:

Well, and so that's why we want, we want to, you know, create a stepping stone.

Matt Monday:

Because the other challenge is even if you know of a great coach, not everyone can afford a great coach or they're not sure that leap.

Matt Monday:

And so being able to have a bit of an experience with an AI version of a great coach before going into the one on one, that's what we hope to do.

Matt Monday:

And so powerful.

Matt Monday:

Yeah.

Matt Monday:

Thank you.

Matt Monday:

And so by this time next year, we're going to have more voices.

Matt Monday:

We have three new ones on the way that are joining soon.

Matt Monday:

We'll probably have another 10 to 20 actual coaches on the platform next year.

Matt Monday:

And while we have a long list of meditation oriented features that our customers are asking us for, that'll all be added here soon.

Matt Monday:

The next big thing that we'll likely be working on next year and hopefully launch by this time is more of a conversational interface that really remembers what's important to you and helps to illuminate your understanding of yourself, your values, your goals, the habits you want to have.

Matt Monday:

And with that can help you identify areas where maybe it's it's in the family pillar of your life or the financial pillar of your life.

Matt Monday:

Where are you?

Matt Monday:

Not quite where you want to be and how do you focus on making adjustments to get to where you want to be?

Matt Monday:

The basics of coaching, I'd like to call it.

Matt Monday:

And, and we hope to have that, you know, by this time next year.

Matt Monday:

And then the following year would be the More advanced workshops where if you want, you know, if you are specifically a coach yourself and want to work with a coach of the coaches, when you engage with Brett Hill on Vital, you'll have that more specific type of workshop.

Matt Monday:

We hoped out for that.

Brett Hill:

It's really an incredible vision.

Brett Hill:

And it's not just a vision.

Brett Hill:

This is actual bits in the net you can buy today and a service you can actually make use of today that provides significant value but framed and motivated by vision.

Brett Hill:

And I.

Brett Hill:

And it's a powerful one.

Brett Hill:

And I think, you know, democratizing coaching in a way.

Brett Hill:

And in your story, I can hear you say, you know, how the coaches have really opened doors for you.

Brett Hill:

And you're also, in some ways, you're positioning without explicitly saying that, you know, Vital is like a coaching.

Brett Hill:

A coaching ambassador in a way.

Brett Hill:

It's like trying to help coaching reach more people, people that can't reach otherwise.

Brett Hill:

And that's one of the big, big exclamation points I would put out there, is that a platform like this can help people who would never pick up the phone or find a coach.

Brett Hill:

One on one can have a coaching experience that can open big doors for them that might lead them to a one on one or deeper experience.

Brett Hill:

Yep, really great stuff on.

Brett Hill:

On Matt's website, which I'll put links to.

Brett Hill:

He has this one phrase which I wanted to read before we summarize, which is, awareness leads to clarity.

Brett Hill:

Clarity leads to choice, and choice leads to transformation.

Brett Hill:

I love that so much.

Brett Hill:

Awareness leads to clarity.

Brett Hill:

Clarity leads to choice.

Brett Hill:

Choice leads to transformation.

Brett Hill:

Boom.

Brett Hill:

That's amazing.

Brett Hill:

Well, thank you, Matt.

Brett Hill:

It's been great having you here.

Brett Hill:

Is there anything else you want to say to our listeners before we wrap up?

Matt Monday:

Well, thank you, Brett, not only for being a part of Vital, but also just plugging a couple of my friends that I know have also worked with you directly and the great things that they say about working with you.

Matt Monday:

Thank you.

Matt Monday:

It's encouraging for me to recommend you to people in my network and to know that people have such glowing reviews.

Matt Monday:

So you're a great human being.

Matt Monday:

I am very appreciative of you and what you do, and I'm really excited for what the future holds for both of us.

Brett Hill:

Well, I appreciate that this is a real life.

Brett Hill:

Our listeners are kind of participating in witnessing what I call the circle of qualities.

Brett Hill:

Like when you yourself try to manifest things at a certain level, you wind up resonating and vibing and connecting with other people who are also at that thing.

Brett Hill:

And if you all stay connected, you uplevel, the whole circle.

Brett Hill:

And then everybody that they influence also is upleveled.

Brett Hill:

And this is why I say to the members of the Mindful Coach association that, you know, we sometimes get stuck in the idea that I can't transform the world, but I want you to know, and I mean this from the bottom, the deepest parts of me, that together we are a mighty force.

Brett Hill:

You know, we are.

Brett Hill:

You might think you're a wave, but we are the ocean of waves, and.

Brett Hill:

And together, that is an incredible force.

Brett Hill:

So thank you once again, man, for stepping in and owning your influence and trying to make a big difference.

Brett Hill:

I really appreciate it.

Brett Hill:

On behalf of the world, I appreciate that.

Brett Hill:

I think you got the message, by the way, from your.

Brett Hill:

Your.

Brett Hill:

I'm gonna.

Brett Hill:

I'm gonna do whatever I need to if I can pass this test.

Brett Hill:

I think you're doing it.

Matt Monday:

Thank you.

Matt Monday:

I hope so.

Matt Monday:

I hope so.

Brett Hill:

All right.

Brett Hill:

Thank you again.

About the Podcast

The Mindful Coach Podcast
Supporting Community & Success For Coaches Who Value Mindfulness in Life and Work
Mindful Coaching is not just a skill; it's a movement.

In a world obsessed with "getting more done," many feel the urgent need to help people in a more profound way.

And many of us have found that the more mindful we are in our life and work, the better or experience of life and the quality of our work. We make better decisions and inspire deeper connections in ourselves and others because we are committed to being more deeply connected with ourselves and the world.

In becoming a professional coach and coach trainer, I experienced (and still do!) a great deal of hype and predatory marketing targeting coaches. So, I created The Mindful Coach Association. A safe haven and community of mindful professionals where we can connect, collaborate, and support each other in our learning, lives, and success. Free from the constant drone of mastermind pitches and promises of instant wealth.

As the founder of the association, I talk to a lot of coaches.

One day, after listening to a particularly inspired coach doing great work with the LGBTQ+ community and also hearing from another working with immigrant populations to help them adapt to a new culture, I felt like wow - "People really need to hear about this work."

But there is no venue for coaches who are doing amazing, important work but aren't publishing books, doing podcasts, TV shows, selling out masterminds, and "crushing 7 figures."

And if you take the many thousands of inspired, courageous coaches doing great work with challenged populations - this is a mighty force indeed - but one that has no voice.

The Mindful Coach Podcast was created to give a voice to those incredible coaches whose work is unheard and unheralded.

Now you can hear their stories of great work that is going on in the world, work that you may not otherwise encounter -and be inspired as I have by the collective goodness that's blossoming in the world.

And you are a part of this work!

Beyond these stories, the podcast is a gateway to a vibrant community - The Mindful Coach Association (https://mindfulcoachassociation.com) Here, you'll have the opportunity to engage in enriching conversations with our guests and fellow mindful professionals during our weekly meetings. It's a safe, collaborative space where individual actions culminate into a powerful, unified force. No upsells or pitches.

Moreover, this podcast is designed to aid in the growth of your practice. We introduce you to exceptional services and cutting-edge technologies, including AI, to enhance your productivity and success. Additionally, a coach is always growing their skills so you'll gain invaluable insights and practical tips from experts in new and powerful coaching modalities.

Profile picture for Brett Hill

Brett Hill

I'm a mindful somatic coach and coach trainer. I'm on a mission to help coaches be the best they can be, and the best way I know to do that, is to promote and encourage coach mindfulness. I created the Mindful Coach Method to help coaches learn the many great techniques and practices I've had the good fortune to learn and employ over the years.

But my interests go beyond training coaches and private practice.

I founded the Mindful Coach Association so coaches and other helping professionals who value mindfulness in their work can connect and collaborate. To help members be successful and tell their stories to the world. I launched the Mindful Coach Podcast.

Strangely enough, my interests in mindful communication align with my passion for technology.

After graduating with a degree in interpersonal communication, I became a technology expert and enjoyed a distinguished technical career. I frequently presented at technical conferences worldwide for companies like Microsoft, authored books, and was awarded Microsoft’s distinguished “Most Valuable Professional” award for nine years.

All my life I've been fascinated with how things actually work. That means looking deeply and seriously inside as well as at the world. How do our minds work? What are the limits of the human capacity to learn and understand? What creates unhappiness or joy?

I studied many inner practices, from common forms to very esoteric. I taught mindfulness and meditation in many forms. One of my most immersive studies was in Hakomi, a mindfulness-based somatic psychology, with founder Ron Kurtz. Also group dynamics under the guidance of Amina Knowlan, creator of Matrix Leadership. In addition, I taught beginning and advanced meditation for several years at the Lotus Center in Okla. City and established the Quest Institute meditation center in Dallas.

After obtaining several coach certifications, I created and teache The Mindful Coach Method to help “bridge the gap” so coaches can experience and use coaching presence, coach-centered mindfulness, and the somatic techniques he has found so essential in his work, yet are often missing in coach training.

I'm on a mission in my work as a coach, teacher, speaker, and author to help people be more present and connected to their authentic voice, and the world itself. I specialize in mindful communications and coach training so we can connect authentically, speak truly, and listen deeply. What does the world need more than this?

Certifications include International Coaching Federation, Somatic-Wellness & Mindfulness Coach, and Mindful Facilitator by the Institute for Organizational Mindfulness. He’s also an alumnus of the Inner MBA by Sounds True, and has hundreds of hours of training in Hakomi, Matrix Group Leadership, Martial Art, Contact Improvisation, and others.
